Which support does your business need: administration, quality or training?
A growing workload does not always mean that your organisation needs a broad consulting project. Sometimes the immediate need is a reliable filing system, a clearer procedure or a short training programme. The useful first question is: what should work better when the assignment ends?
Start with the difficulty, rather than the name of a service
Describe one situation that regularly costs your team time. For example: a training coordinator cannot find the latest attendance record, several colleagues use different versions of an instruction, or a manager receives reports without a clear action owner. These are different problems and may require different forms of support.
Write down who is affected, what information is missing and what outcome you need. A concrete description makes it easier to agree a manageable first assignment.
Match the need to the right type of support
- Administrative support: useful when documents, requests, schedules or recurring follow-up need better organisation. A possible output is a document register or a tracking template.
- Business consulting: appropriate when the priority itself needs clarification, responsibilities overlap or a project needs a practical action plan.
- Quality audits: useful when you want to assess practices against agreed criteria and identify evidence-based findings. An internal audit does not itself grant certification.
- Procedures and documentation: appropriate when teams need a consistent way of working, clear instructions, checklists or forms.
- Tailored training: useful when people need to develop a skill or apply a process, rather than simply receive another document.
- Marketing and communication: appropriate when the offer is difficult to explain or the organisation needs a clearer content plan and digital presence.
A practical example: organising training records
Imagine an organisation whose attendance sheets, programme versions and evaluation forms are stored in several locations. Begin with administrative support to establish a shared register and identify the responsible contacts. A documented procedure can then explain naming, validation and storage. A short training session helps the team use the new arrangement. A later internal review can check whether the agreed process is followed.
This is an illustrative sequence, not a claim about a completed client project. The order and scope should reflect your actual needs; not every organisation requires all four steps.
Agree what will be delivered before work starts
A useful proposal should answer these questions:
- Which activity, team or site is included?
- What information and access will the organisation provide?
- What documents, recommendations or learning materials will be handed over?
- Who will review and validate the work?
- What timetable and fees apply, and what is outside the scope?
For an audit, agree the criteria and evidence requirements. For training, define the audience, prerequisites, objectives and evaluation method. For marketing, agree publication responsibilities and any separate advertising costs. These details make comparisons between proposals more meaningful than a service label alone.
Prepare a short project brief
You do not need a long specification to start a conversation. Prepare the activity concerned, the current difficulty, the desired improvement, the people involved, your preferred timetable and any location or language requirements. Add one or two examples of existing documents where appropriate, without sending unnecessary confidential information.
Consider a defined first phase when the broader need is uncertain. For example, ask for an assessment and a prioritised plan before committing to implementation.
